Among the many workshops, panels, and events at the AIC 30th Annual Meeting, I wanted to call particular attention to two workshops scheduled for June 11 which would be of interest to conservators and non-conservators alike. The advance registration deadline is May 15. "Safety in the Decontamination of Cultural Property" Renaissance Miami Biscayne Bay Hotel, Miami, Florida June 11, 2002 8 am - 3:30 pm Organized by the American Institute for Conservation Health and Safety Committee, Ad Hoc Working Group on Safety Training Curricula Participants may earn 0.5 CM points (ABIH) This one-day workshop presents a safety-based approach to the decontamination of collection items, including identification of contaminants, various decontamination methods, personal protection equipment, use of HEPA/ULPA filtration (including methods to safely change filters), construction of decontamination units, exhaust ventilation systems, methods of validating the results of decontamination efforts, and the value of adopting occupational health and safety approaches to cleaning operations. The workshop will incorporate lectures, case studies from the World Trade Center disaster and other decontamination situations, and demonstrations. Instructors: Virginia M. "Setting Up an Environmental Monitoring Program" Renaissance Miami Biscayne Bay Hotel, Miami, Florida June 11, 2002 9 am - 4 pm This seminar discusses how to establish a monitoring program for conservation environments in museums, libraries, and archives. Practical methods to monitor humidity, temperature, lighting, particulates, gaseous contamination and collection safety are discussed along with suggested equipment and practical field techniques. Includes extensive in-class demonstrations of equipment, a discussion of techniques at various cost levels, and interpretation of hygrothermograph charts. Instructor: William P. Lull, President of Garrison/Lull of New Jersey.
