Subject: Hantavirus
As Walter noted, there has been DistList activity on this subject in the past, but I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate Mary Ballard's comments from January of 1998. Because of the health implications of hantavirus, and other similar concerns such as histoplasmosis, carried in pigeon droppings, and molds, you should call in a certified industrial hygienist with experience dealing with your particular concerns to evaluate your situation. Federal institutions such as the NPS have access to the Federal Occupational Health program, a branch of HHS as well as private firms. Always ask if the staff have specific background in your problem. Industrial hygienists specialize just conservators do, and a firm that works in asbestos or lead abatement will not be of much assistance to you.
