Integrated Conservation of Territories and Landscapes of Heritage Value Rome, Italy Nov. 18-Dec.13, 2002 ICCROM, the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property, in collaboration with ITUC partners such as CECI (Federal University of Pernambuco, Recife, Brazil), the Conservation Study Institute, (U.S. National Park Service), SLU (Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Department of Landscape Planning Ultuna, Uppsala, Sweden) and other international and national institutions involved with landscape management, e.g. UNESCO-WH Centre; ICOMOS; IUCN; ICPL (International Centre for Protected Landscapes), will be holding a training workshop in Rome on "Integrated Conservation of Territories and Landscapes of Heritage Value", Nov. 18-Dec. 13, 2002. The workshop announcement, which was initially released on March 15, is included at the end of this message. The workshop will assist World Heritage and other significant heritage site managers to improve their ability to integrate concern for cultural heritage in sustainable planning, management and development of both urban and rural settlements. Through exchange of experiences and insights, the workshop will provide participants a comparative framework which can place their work in a global perspective. The workshop also aims at building new professional relationships among participants and agencies responsible for landscape management, and at developing a regional and international network providing continuing access to up-to-date information and expertise. We are interested in inviting the participation of senior managers/professionals with significant experience in the sustainable planning, management and development of landscapes of heritage value. We kindly request your assistance in finding appropriate candidate(s) within your organization/office/country. Participant Benefits: Through exchange of experiences and insights, the workshop will allow participants to: * gain a comparative analytical framework, of assistance in assessing their own work, and placing it in a global landscape management perspective; * gain a theoretical and conceptual basis for their work; * be able to assess the significance of the heritage value of landscapes; * be aware of means to integrate concern for identified heritage values appropriately in decision-making affecting landscapes analyse key elements of landscape context, including recognition of intangible and community values; * work with a variety of integrated and participatory management and conservation methods; * gain access to examples of best practice; * focus on key needed landscape conservation and management skills including the ability to work with professionals from other disciplines and with communities; * build professional relationships, and sustain cooperation with others on similar issues and projects in an on-going international network * identify follow up activities that will allow this knowledge to be shared within their organization, with their partners and within their region. The four-week workshop will consist of topical presentations,thematic workshops and field-based projects and excursions. The international interdisciplinary group of professionals taking part in the workshop will actively contribute to the programme by bringing their own experience and current questions into the discussion. Field-studies (in Italy) will be used to expose current problems and solutions and provide a shared platform for discussion of approaches. Participants accepted for the workshop will also be asked to prepare an assignment in advance, treating a current issue or problem in their own work. This project will be shared with other participants and used as a case study during the workshop. Particular attention will be given in the workshop to issues pertinent to the management of WH cultural landscapes. Language: English is the working language of the workshop. Candidates must have strong communication and writing skills in English. A certificate of language proficiency may be required. Admission:Target group: Senior managers/professionals with significant experience in the sustainable planning, management and development of landscapes of heritage value. This group would include land use planners, landscape architects, ecologists, historians, geographers, archaeologists, agricultural and forest specialists, economists, lawyers, developers, lenders, administrators, trainers/educators, and others. Preference will be given to those whose working positions will allow them to share with others skills and information gained during the workshop. Course Fee: US$ 1000. Additional fees may be charged to citizens of non-member states. Number: Maximum of 20. A number of places have been reserved for those from partner institutions, but ICCROM will accept up to 15 qualified external applicants. Scholarships:ICCROM has the possibility in a limited number of circumstances to offer scholarship support for living costs during the workshop. However, candidates are advised to seek financial aid from other sources, such as governments, employers, foundations. ICCROM is prepared to offer advice on efforts to seek scholarship support. A minimum of US$1500-$2000 for living costs would be required for the 4 week duration of the workshop in Rome. Observers: Observers with appropriate qualifications may be accepted to attend specific portions of the workshop. A fee of US$ 400 per week is charged. Certificate: A certificate of attendance is awarded to all participants who have satisfactorily completed the workshop.
