Advanced internship in objects conservation Shelburne Museum Note: Informal interviews for the following position are invited at the AIC meeting. Please contact Richard Kerschner at the host hotel. The Shelburne Museum is offering a one-year advanced internship in objects conservation supported by an IMLS Conservation Project Support Training Grant. The intern will assist with the conservation of the Museum's collection of dollhouses and miniatures in preparation for the reinstallation of these artifacts in a renovated historic gallery space. The one-year position will begin in November 2002. Responsibilities: The intern will conduct a condition survey of the Museum's collection of dollhouses and miniature interiors and work with the objects conservator and curator to select artifacts for treatment. The intern will conduct technical examinations, complete documentation, and perform conservation treatments. Treatments to the dollhouses may include major structural repairs, removal of old repairs, cleaning of overpaint and dirt from surfaces, and compensating areas of loss. A wide range of artifacts are represented in the miniature interiors, including ceramics and glass, base metals, furniture, paper, photographs, textiles, and a surprising array of other organic materials. The intern will modify the vitrines that contain miniature interior so they are dust-tight but easier to access. The intern will also become familiar with preventive conservation actions appropriate for the Hat and Fragrance Unit that houses the dollhouses and miniature interiors and assist with such actions as appropriate, including: mocking-up and evaluating new lighting systems, monitoring environmental conditions, and implementing fire detection and suppression upgrades. The intern will conduct practical research that informs conservation treatments, and contribute to Shelburne's public outreach program. Qualifications: The applicant should have a Masters Degree in Conservation plus a Certificate of Advanced Study beyond a Masters Degree or equivalent training, and a minimum of one year conservation internship training. In addition, applicant should have specialized training in 3-dimensional objects with an interest and good general background working with a wide variety of materials and composite objects. The applicant should have a positive attitude and good communication skills, be adaptable, and work well as a team member. Salary and Benefits: $28,000/year plus benefits, travel, relocation allowance, and on-site housing.
