Conservation of outdoor metal sculpture Summer course at the Haute Ecole d'Arts Appliques of La Chaux-de-Fonds, filiere HES-CRAE, Switzerland July 8-12, and July 15-19, 2002 This course is designed for conservators who wish to increase their knowledge of the conservation of outdoor metal sculpture. The course gives a technical and historical background of outdoor statuary, as well as the most recent developments in the conservation of these monuments. All materials used in outdoor sculpture are addressed : bronze, cast iron, steel, zinc, lead and aluminium. Logistic and administrative issues are equally discussed. The lectures are illustrated with examples in the city of La Chaux-de-Fonds, as well as with two visits to a local bell foundry and a visit to the storage facilities of the Museum of Fine Arts. The first week is dedicated to the more theoretical aspects, whereas during the second week the participants will document and work on a selected group of sculptures. Antoine Amarger, who has been active in the field of outdoor sculpture conservation for many years, will lead through most of this course. The course language is French.
