Instructor: Milton Sonday
New York University
August 5-9, 2002
10 am - 5 pm

Application Deadline: June 21, 2002
$400.00

This seminar will provide the textile conservator with a practical
approach to describing, recording, and analyzing woven fabrics.
Microscopes and a projection system will be available to study and
discuss a variety of fabrics that represent major categories of
weaving techniques. The aim is to present approaches to looking at
and recording fabrics and provide an outline for continued studies.
The format of the seminar will be flexible and not a strictly
structured lecture style course. Students should come prepared to
ask questions and participate in discussions.

Some prior knowledge of woven structures or weaving techniques is
required and access to a collection to reinforce future study is
desirable. Basic supplies will be provided.

Milton Sonday is an internationally renowned textile historian.
Formerly the Senior Researcher and Curator at the Cooper-Hewitt
National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution, he has introduced
numerous conservators to the simple and complex structures of
textiles. He is the author of many articles and has lectured
extensively on the analysis of historic textile structures.
