Subject: Wood damaged by furniture beetles
I would like to hear about anybody else's experiences with consolidating wood damaged by woodworm. I have coming up for treatment some window pelmets from Burton Constable Hall, East Yorkshire, UK, <URL:http://www.burtonconstable.com>, made by Thomas Chippendale for Burton Constable's Ball Room. They are illustrated in Christopher Gilbert's book The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale. Extreme environmental problems i.e. a very damp building has led to wood-boring pests becoming a big problem at this building. The environmental conditions are being dealt with. The pelmets, now dismantled and in the workshop, require treatment because they are in a very weakened state. The gilt surfaces are largely intact but inside there is much damage inside (very hollow, sort of cardboard sound when tapped) and many exit holes on the back. Experiences of what consolidants to experiment with and methods of application please, Ian Fraser Conservator of Furniture Leeds Museums and Galleries Temple Newsam House *** Conservation DistList Instance 15:81 Distributed: Tuesday, June 4, 2002 Message Id: cdl-15-81-016 ***Received on Wednesday, 29 May, 2002
