Subject: Course on conservation of gilded ornament
The Conservation and Restoration of Gilded Ornament West Dean College September 22-25, 2002 Course Leaders: Christine Powell, V&A Museum and Judy Wetherall, private sector conservator and lecturer The course will concentrate on gilded surfaces found on period furniture, interior architecture and traditional gilded frames. It will explore practical application, history and techniques of gilded ornament and to review current conservation practice. Lectures and case histories will include: * development of gilding techniques * discussion of diagnostic techniques and appropriate methodologies * conservation techniques, including materials. Specialist techniques such as composition, papier mache and carved wood ornament, pastiglia, intaglio, gesso cutting and texturing, press brokaat, sgraffito, gilded and slivered finishes, lustre work, coatings, ageing and toning will be discussed. There will be hands-on sessions and opportunities for practical experiment with cleaning techniques, consolidation etc. Applicants should have previous gilding experience.
