SOLINET, Inc., the Southeastern Library Network, is pleased to announce our Summer Preservation Workshops (Please excuse cross-posting): Disaster Preparedness and Recovery Roanoke City Public Library, Roanoke, VA August 20, 2002 9am - 4pm Libraries and archives are vulnerable to a variety of disasters ranging from fires and flooding to roof leaks and mold outbreaks. To prevent unnecessary loss of materials, librarians and archivist must be prepared to handle both minor incidents and large scale emergencies. Through lecture, group exercises, and demonstration, this workshop will provide the training necessary to plan, organize, and execute a disaster plan and salvage operation. Cost is $105 SOLINET members ($95 early bird, $130 late registration); $145 Non-SOLINET members ($135 early bird, $165 late registration). Any institution within Virginia qualifies for the member rate. Preservation Microfilming: The Silver Standard University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY September 16-17, 2002 8:30am - 5pm Optional Q&A session until 6:30 on September 16. Libraries continue to be challenged by crumbling 19th century book and paper collections. Digital technology is the choice to enhance access, but the Council on Library Information Resources considers preservation microfilming "the gold standard" for preserving the intellectual content of brittle, endangered materials. The two-day session will cover planning projects, selection and preparation for filming, microfilm technology and equipment, standards and quality control including demonstration and hand-on activities. This workshop is designed for staff in all types of libraries and archives who manage or work with microfilming projects, preservation administrators, and collection managers. Cost is $195 SOLINET members ($185 early bird, $220 late registration), $235 Non-SOLINET members ($225 early bird, $260 late registration. Price includes lunch on both days. Any institution within Kentucky qualifies for the member rate. Commercial Library Binding Historic New Orleans Collections New Orleans, LA September 30, 2002 9am - 4pm This workshop provides the tools needed to make appropriate binding decisions that balance preservation goals and financial realities. Modules include: book structure and modern book manufacturing methods, an overview of bindery operations, discussion on contracts and vendor relations, and decision making. Included is a showing of Library Binding: A Shared Responsibility, A Collaborative Effort (a 1989 video developed by a team of librarians and binders), an exhibit of binding materials and methods, and an extensive resource packet. This workshop is designed for heads of technical services, serials, and/or binding departments, and bindery clerks in the bindery prep unit. Cost is $105 SOLINET members ($95 early bird, $130 late registration); $145 Non-SOLINET members ($135 early bird, $165 late registration). Any institution within Louisiana qualifies for the member rate.
