Libraries and archives are vulnerable to a variety of disasters
ranging from fires and flooding to roof leaks and mold
outbreaks. To prevent unnecessary loss of materials, librarians
and archivist must be prepared to handle both minor incidents
and large scale emergencies. Through lecture, group exercises,
and demonstration, this workshop will provide the training
necessary to plan, organize, and execute a disaster plan and
    salvage operation.

Cost is $105 SOLINET members ($95 early bird, $130 late
    registration); $145 Non-SOLINET members ($135 early bird, $165
late registration). Any institution within Virginia qualifies

Preservation Microfilming: The Silver Standard
University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY
September 16-17, 2002
8:30am - 5pm
Optional Q&A session until 6:30 on September 16.

Libraries continue to be challenged by crumbling 19th century
book and paper collections. Digital technology is the choice to

considers preservation microfilming "the gold standard" for
preserving the intellectual content of brittle, endangered
materials. The two-day session will cover planning projects,
selection and preparation for filming, microfilm technology and
equipment, standards and quality control including demonstration
    and hand-on activities.

This workshop is designed for staff in all types of libraries
and archives who manage or work with microfilming projects,
    preservation administrators, and collection managers.

Cost is $195 SOLINET members ($185 early bird, $220 late
    registration), $235 Non-SOLINET members ($225 early bird, $260
late registration. Price includes lunch on both days. Any
institution within Kentucky qualifies for the member rate.

binding decisions that balance preservation goals and financial
realities. Modules include: book structure and modern book

making. Included is a showing of Library Binding: A Shared
Responsibility, A Collaborative Effort (a 1989 video developed
by a team of librarians and binders), an exhibit of binding
materials and methods, and an extensive resource packet.

This workshop is designed for heads of technical services,
