Softwoods and hardwoods are studied using the Princes Risborough keys for wood identification. Differences between trunk wood and root wood are considered. Two of the five days are devoted to the preparation and identification of tree roots, modern timbers, collapsed/waterlogged wood, charcoal and veneers. The course is suitable for conservators in art and archaeology, furniture restorers and forensic scientists. It is also a useful introduction to the identification of wood fibres in paper. There are also case studies and lectures on the theory of electrodeposition.
