Associate Conservator Department of Objects Conservation Metropolitan Museum of Art The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York seeks an Associate Conservator for the Department of Objects Conservation. This person will be the departmental representative assigned by and reporting to the department head as the conservator in residence at The Cloisters and is expected to work at this site on a nearly full-time basis. He or she will work in the newly constructed Sherman Fairchild Center for Objects Conservation at The Cloisters, a modern and fully equipped laboratory with additional access to the extensive resources of the Sherman Fairchild Center for Objects Conservation in the main building of the Museum. Principal responsibilities include examination and treatment of objects; prescription and monitoring of climate-control parameters; evaluation of the condition of works of art proposed for loan to other institutions and recommendations regarding same; condition evaluation of objects loaned to The Cloisters for special exhibition or other purpose; technical examination of objects proposed for acquisition by the Museum with respect to authenticity, previous restorations and need for treatment; written and photographic documentation of work performed, as well as appropriate research and publication of studies conducted on the collection. Other responsibilities include supervision and training of student interns and volunteers, supervision of consulting conservators and contractors, preparation of annual budgets for supplies and materials, and drafting of grant applications. The incumbent is also expected to work closely with the curatorial staff of the Department of Medieval Art and The Cloisters as well as with the conservation staff of the Sherman Fairchild Center for Objects Conservation in the main building of the Museum. Requirements for this position include: a Masters degree in art history, archaeology, or other field related to the conservation of works of art. A formal, graduate education in conservation with an emphasis on the examination and treatment of European medieval objects. At least six years of museum-based experience in conservation with a demonstrated capacity for independent research and publication related to the technology and preservation of works of art. Proficiency in laboratory methods and the use of analytical instrumentation as related to conservation. Familiarity with and proficiency in the application of current methods of treatment and examination. Experience with architectural conservation and building renovation, and a demonstrated ability in the management of projects involving conservation staff and resources.
