Museum Scientist National Museums of Scotland Applications are invited for this 50 week casual contract post based in the Department of Conservation and Analytical Research, Royal Museum, Chambers Street, Edinburgh <URL:http://www.nms.ac.uk>. Salary will be c.#17,000 p.a. (pro rata) depending on qualifications and experience. An analytical scientist is required to investigate the technology and composition of objects from NMS's historical and archaeological collections using XRF, SEM and other analytical methods. The main work will involve the non-destructive analysis of metals and inorganic materials to answer questions of identification, date, condition and provenance. In addition to this "service" work, more in-depth study of the collection is anticipated. You will be an able and self-motivated inorganic scientist. As well as first (and probably higher) degree qualifications in physical sciences, you will have demonstrated your research ability on museum or archaeological collections. An excellent communicator, you will be keen to form part of a small specialist team.
