Subject: Timber chair
Can anyone recommend non-invasive methods for the investigation of a upholstered timber chair? A late Georgian rail back chair was modified during the Victorian period. The modifications appear to include the infill of the open chair back with buttoned upholstery and overstuffing of the seat. We are attempting to determine the original appearance of the chair without disturbance of the provenanced upholstery; primarily the configuration of the splat (vertical, horizontal or diagonal) and the likely seat construction (caned or upholstered).
