Subject: Timber chair

If you can get it done, I would advise radiographing (X-raying) the chair. This will reveal all the hidden structure; it will certainly show what kind of splat the chair has, and what kind of original seat. It will also reveal details of fixings (nails, screws etc) and any previous repairs. Try your local hospital: if they can't help, or the chair won't fit under their X-ray machine, try a local NDT company. You may find that this job is so far removed from their normal work (like x-raying welds in pipelines) that they may do it for nothing, or for free publicity.
