Conservator - West National Trust for Scotland The National Trust for Scotland was established in 1931 to act as guardian of the nation's magnificent heritage of architectural, scenic, and historic treasures and to promote public enjoyment of them. The West Region boasts properties of great importance for Scottish architectural history and collections of works of art of the highest merit. Most Properties include important collections of material culture ranging through furniture, ceramics, textiles and metalwork accrued by successive generations. The NTS is currently seeking a conservator for the West Region, to be based in the West Regional Office at Greenbank, six miles south of Glasgow city centre. Job purpose: To ensure the highest standards of care for the Trust's historic interiors and collections within the Region, and to seek innovative solutions to challenges related to the display of these collections. Responsibilities: The main area of responsibility is conservation management. The conservator works closely with property staff; the curators and senior conservator based at the head office in Edinburgh; the other specialist advisers in the Regional Office; and the conservators based in the other regions to deliver in the following areas: * production and implementation of Collections Care Plans for individual properties * environmental monitoring and control * protection and movement of collections before, during and after major building works * advising on and coordinating remedial conservation of the collections * setting up storage facilities * packing and transport of collections * developing Emergency Procedures for individual properties In addition, the conservator contributes to: * strategic direction and policy development * education and enjoyment, for example through the development of interpretive and educational material in the area of collections care * influence and persuasion, for example by giving talks and presentations on the conservation work of the Trust * organisation and resources, for example through the implementation of staff training in collections care, and by advising property managers on the use of their budgets for equipment and materials for collections care Essential qualifications and experience include a recognised conservation qualification with at least three years experience in practical conservation; proven experience in preventive conservation and general collections care; and a current full driving licence. Desirable experience includes familiarity with conservation planning; experience of working to and within budgetary constraints; and experience in project management, the delivery of training, and/or having published articles on conservation issues. Terms and conditions: This is a permanent, full-time post at Grade 7, starting salary UKP19,559-22,353. The post-holder will be allocated a vehicle available for private use subject to reimbursement of personal mileage, and will be given the opportunity to join a Group Personal Pension Scheme.
