Fungus

A decoratively painted tree fungus has arrived in the lab recently,
very badly flaking.  I was wondering if anyone has had experience
consolidating flaking paint on tree fungus? or any warnings on
adhesive, resin or solvent incompatibilities with tree fungus?
Paint is matte, no varnish, the medium unknown but the artist is
recorded as having used house paint/anything on sale at the local
hardware store.
