The Conservation of Low-fired Ceramics and Unfired Ware
Campbell Center for Historic Preservation Studies, Mt. Carroll, IL.
September 23-28, 2002

The Conservation of Low-fired and Unfired ware--Tutored by Hazel
Botha A mid-career, specialist short course for conservators and
restorers of ceramics and other siliceous materials. This is a
hands-on, practical course that teaches the specialist skills and
approach required for the treatment, conservation and/or restoration
of porous wares such as low-fired ceramics, certain unfired ware and
so-called archaeological ceramics. This rarely offered course topic
will teach and demonstrate:

    * methods and modern mediums used for the consolidation of
        friable ceramics

    * desalination and the effects of soluble salts on ceramic
        bodies

    * the differing effects of particular solvents on a range of
        consolidants and adhesives

    * the use of calcium-based fills

    * the making of wax replicas for casting and reproduction of
        larger missing areas

    * the range of substitute, suitable retouching media
(Liquitex, Cryla, White polish, Acrylic and Vinyl polymers)

    * conventional range of conservation/restoration media

While this curriculum takes full account of current conservation
ethics, it will also prove of equal relevance and value to
restorers, who will appreciate the subject's possibilities also in
studio restoration.
