Living Heritage Forever: Museums and Heritage in a sustainable development context Pretoria August 28, 2002 8:30 am - 4 pm The Northern Flagship Institution and the South African Museums Association Gauteng North will be hosting the "Living Heritage Forever" conference as a parallel event for the Science at the Summit Conference at the CSIR Conference Centre in Pretoria, South Africa. The themes identified for the Science at the Summit Conference, which is being organized as a Science and Technology outreach event includes: * The conclusion of a new social contract between science and society. * Capacity building for narrowing the knowledge and technology divides. * Beacons of hope (highlighting success stories where Science and Technology projects have markedly enhanced sustainable development) * Sustainable Science * Youth outreach * Monitoring and early warning systems Conference Fee and Registration: The Conference is free. Tea and coffee will be available for free. Every person is responsible for their own meals. A restaurant will be available at own cost. Programme: People who want to deliver a paper during the conference can contact Carina Malherbe. There is still limited space so act quickly. The programme is divided into three sessions. Each speaker is given 20 minutes to present their paper. At the end of each session time is allocated for questions from the floor. All speakers have to complete the attached form and send it to Carina Malherbe on or before 15, 2002. A glimpse of the earlier animals with the help of an electron microscope Dr Bob Brain Emeritus Curator - Transvaal Museum * In ancient limestones of southern Africa we are now finding exciting 500 - 600 million-year-old fossils of the earliest animals. * The scanning electron microscope is a very useful tool in showing us the surface detail and structure of these ancestral creatures, and helping in the understanding of subsequent evolution.
