Book and Paper Conservator (temporary position) The Newberry Library <URL:http://www.newberry.org> Reporting to the Director of Conservation Services and the Collections Conservator, the Book and Paper Conservator (a temporary position running approximately September 1, 2002 January 31, 2003 with possibility of extension) assists the Collections Conservator in repair and refurbishing of the General Collections, Reference Collections and some Special Collection materials. Collections include books, papers, parchment, photographs and other materials. Treatments include pamphlet binding, cloth and leather binding repairs, rebinding using period binding styles, washing and deacidification, paper and parchment stabilization, box making, encapsulation and other rehousing. Responsibilities: The Book and Paper Conservator works with the Director of Conservation Services, curators, and stack management staff to inspect incoming materials for pests; identify and prioritize materials in need of repair; specify and perform treatments after consultation with curators; assist in coordination of outside contracts with library binders; support preparation of loans and exhibits; document treatments using a digital camera and FileMaker Pro database; train and oversee volunteers, interns and technicians; participate in environmental and pest monitoring; all other tasks or activities needed for the achievement of departmental goals. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree required; Masters degree in Conservation (or equivalent) required; knowledge of conservation theory and practice for books and papers; extensive experience in bookbinding and repair in a library environment; experience training interns and volunteers; ability to work independently and as part of a team; good computer skills including experience with FileMaker Pro preferred. Schedule: Full time exempt position. Temporary position (five months) with possibility of extension. 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday, with occasional evening or weekend assignments.
