Repairing plastic book wrappers

I have a couple of books that, instead of a paper dust jacket, have
a plastic wrapper (one is probably polypropylene, not sure about the
other) with the title, etc., printed on them.  The plastic is torn
at the corners and top of spine.  Is there a way to close the tears
or is there a clear non-staining adhesive tape that could be used to
prevent further damage?
