SEPIA Workshop on digitization and preventive conservation of
photographic collections
Municipal Archives
Lyon, France
October 7-9, 2002

Archivists, librarians, curators, and photographers in charge of
photographic materials need to know about the role of new technology
in collections management. Digital imaging offers unprecedented
opportunities for access to historical materials. But how can it be
combined with established preservation methods in an integrated
strategy, to ensure optimal access today as well as in the future?

A three day workshop on preventive conservation and digitization of
photographic materials will address this issue. The workshop will
cover basic introductory concepts such as process identification of
supports and preservation methods combined with digitization
principles and its integration into a conservation strategy.

Introduction.

The characteristics of various photographic processes and the
different materials encountered in photographic collections will be
reviewed. Specific requirements for their handling and preservation
will be related to the nature and function of different types of
photographic collections. The workshop will present the basic
concepts of digitization, terminology, and issues to consider when
planning a project. Integration of a digitization project within an
existing preservation strategy as well as the planning of a
well-rounded project will be discussed. Attention will be given to
assessment, setting priorities, specifications, budgeting,
preparation and security of original objects, and quality control.

In the scope of the workshop, participants will acquire a basic
knowledge of technical issues that will enable them to make informed
decisions about the role of digitization within a preservation and
management strategy for photographic collections.

Speakers include:

    Jean-Paul Gandolfo
Professor at the Ecole Nationale Superieure Louis-Lumiere
    (Noisy-le-Grand, France)

    Pierre-Emmanuel Nyeborg
Consultant, preventive conservation and photograph conservation

    Jean-Gabriel Lopez
    Consultant, preventive conservation and digitization

They will present outlines of issues and theory as well as practical
cases, a substantial part of the workshop will be devoted to
practical work and group assignments to develop participants' skills
in finding their own solutions.

The number of participants is limited to 15. The workshop will be in
French. The fee for the three day course is 330 euros. This includes
coffees, teas, lunches and a course packet with supplementary
reading materials.

The workshop is supported by the European Community as part of the
