SEPIA Workshop on digitization and preventive conservation of photographic collections Municipal Archives Lyon, France October 7-9, 2002 Archivists, librarians, curators, and photographers in charge of photographic materials need to know about the role of new technology in collections management. Digital imaging offers unprecedented opportunities for access to historical materials. But how can it be combined with established preservation methods in an integrated strategy, to ensure optimal access today as well as in the future? A three day workshop on preventive conservation and digitization of photographic materials will address this issue. The workshop will cover basic introductory concepts such as process identification of supports and preservation methods combined with digitization principles and its integration into a conservation strategy. Introduction. The characteristics of various photographic processes and the different materials encountered in photographic collections will be reviewed. Specific requirements for their handling and preservation will be related to the nature and function of different types of photographic collections. The workshop will present the basic concepts of digitization, terminology, and issues to consider when planning a project. Integration of a digitization project within an existing preservation strategy as well as the planning of a well-rounded project will be discussed. Attention will be given to assessment, setting priorities, specifications, budgeting, preparation and security of original objects, and quality control. In the scope of the workshop, participants will acquire a basic knowledge of technical issues that will enable them to make informed decisions about the role of digitization within a preservation and management strategy for photographic collections. Speakers include: Jean-Paul Gandolfo Professor at the Ecole Nationale Superieure Louis-Lumiere (Noisy-le-Grand, France) Pierre-Emmanuel Nyeborg Consultant, preventive conservation and photograph conservation Jean-Gabriel Lopez Consultant, preventive conservation and digitization They will present outlines of issues and theory as well as practical cases, a substantial part of the workshop will be devoted to practical work and group assignments to develop participants' skills in finding their own solutions. The number of participants is limited to 15. The workshop will be in French. The fee for the three day course is 330 euros. This includes coffees, teas, lunches and a course packet with supplementary reading materials. The workshop is supported by the European Community as part of the SEPIA program.
