Subject: Forgeries
**** Moderator's comments: Please respond directly to the author. A UK national newspaper is hoping to run several stories on the problems facing conservation. The journalist is currently collecting stories regarding fakes which were offered for sale to museums or individuals in the last year or so and which were detected (or would have been detected) by conservators. We know of several cases where the conservator was not allowed to examine the object until after purchase and immediately spotted that it was a reproduction (or a deliberate forgery) but would love to hear of more. UKIC is advising the journalist and can act as a conduit to ensure that no embarrassing details are revealed.
