At the ICOM-CC meeting of the Paintings Working Groups in Rio (September 23-27, 2002) there was an interesting presentation on the construction of a light-weight stretcher for large canvas paintings that are to be moved. The paper is titled, "An alternative adjustable aluminum spring stretcher for a large painting," by Thomas Lahoda, P. Lehmann Banke and K-M. Henriksen. The stretcher design allowed for paintings to be restretched by using springs that connected to a secondary support of the painting and then to an aluminum stretcher that was easily constructed and de-constructed for portability.
