Conservator/Restorer Dutch National Museum of Ethnology The Dutch National Museum of Ethnology (Rijksmuseum voor Volkenkunde) <URL:http://www.rmv.nl> has a vacancy for a Conservator/Restorer (male or female) One of the oldest ethnographic museums in the world, the National Museum of Ethnology (NME, or in Dutch, Rijksmuseum voor Volkenkunde (RMV)) in Leiden, the Netherlands, was re-opened to the public in April 2001 after several years rebuilding and refurbishing. The NME/RMV has a collection of around 193,000 objects, and employs around 100 people. This is a part-time position for 32 hours per week (0,89 FTE) in the division of Collections Management. The division has 15 employees, divided into the sections Conservation and Restoration, Depot Management, Registration, and the collection of historical photographs, film and sound. The position-holder will work together with two other conservators, depot and technical staff and external contractors. Job description: In addition to treating objects from the collection, the position-holder is responsible within the conservation team for the preventive conservation and Integrated Pest Management (IPM)programmes. The tasks include: * Conservation of objects, carrying out condition surveys and other conservation-related tasks, as required. * Planning, organising, and carrying out tasks such as monitoring and data-analysis in areas of climate control, object-support, and collections packing and transport. * Planning, organising and carrying out pest monitoring and control tasks. * Initiating, planning and developing new preventive conservation programmes and activities. * Advising staff and others about preventive conservation issues concerning storage, exhibitions, loans and other forms of collection use. Requirements: A degree or diploma in conservation, or some demonstrable equivalent. At least two years working experience in conservation studios. Proven ability to analyse, develop and implement improvements in working methods and techniques within the areas of responsibility. A good knowledge of the chemistry and materials relevant to ethnographic collections A good knowledge of chemical and non-chemical pest control methods is required. Ability to speak, read and write Dutch is preferred, however a good standard of spoken and written English is essential. Knowledge of an additional European language is an advantage. Awareness of, and sensitivity to cultural/ethical aspects of ethnographic collections is essential. Excellent communication and teamworking skills and a good attention to detail are required. What we offer: A part-time contract for a year, which can, at the end of that period and depending on good performance, be converted to a permanent contract. Terms of employment: According to the CAO Verzelfstandigde Rijksmusea (collective agreement on working conditions for employees of National Museums). Salary according to age and experience. An indication of salary is between euro 1.958 and euro 2.562 per month, before tax and deductions, for a 32 hour week (scale 9 CAO).
