Subject: Canvas
I`m working with an oil painting painted on an unusual canvas in which the warp consists of regular linen threads, while the weft seems to consist of paper in the form of twined paper strips. The paper threads are brown, and quite weak and brittle, which has caused the canvas to tear in several places. The canvas is deformed around the tears, and the edges of the tears are overlapping. The painting in question is not dated, but appears to be painted during the first half of the 20th century. The artist is probably Norwegian. Finding any information on similar canvases has proved difficult. I would be grateful for any information, regarding both background/production and treatment of this kind of canvases.
