Assistant Director, Preservation Reformatting and Digitization Preservation Division Columbia University Libraries The Columbia University Libraries seek a dynamic, innovative person to manage the reformatting program for a premier collection, in one of the largest and most active academic preservation departments in the United States. Reporting to the Director for Preservation, the Assistant Director will have system-wide responsibility for Columbia University Libraries' preservation reformatting program, including fiscal, administrative, and operations aspects of microfilming, digitization, photography, and preservation photocopying of rare, special, and general collections materials. The incumbent will work closely with the new Libraries Digital Program Division to expand operations. Duties include: managing library- and grant-funded reformatting operations; supervision of staff who prepare materials for reformatting (copy cataloging on OCLC, targeting, collating, physical preparation, and quality control); managing the customer order program for on-demand microfilm, still photography, and digital conversion services; supervision of technical staff who microfilm, digitize, and photograph materials and perform quality control; writing and monitoring contracts with relevant service bureaus and supply vendors. Responsibilities also include assisting in writing grant proposals and assisting in all aspects of the Columbia Libraries preservation program, including training, disaster prevention and recovery, and system-wide planning for preservation. Requirements are: knowledge of preservation microfilming and digitization policies and technical procedures, with 2 years of experience in a reformatting operation or other relevant preservation experience required; knowledge of bibliographic control of microforms and metadata for digital conversion projects required. Knowledge of current preservation trends, especially electronic applications; ability to work in a fluid, complex organization and to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; formal study of preservation and supervisory experience in a large academic library highly desirable. Accredited MLS, or equivalent experience, and knowledge of a foreign language and ability to handle bibliographic records in a variety of languages are required. Salary ranges for this PC II position are: Librarian I: $43,700 - $54,625; Librarian II: $46,200 - $62,370; Librarian III: $49,200 - $73,800; Librarian IV: $54,200 - $78,950.
