Subject: Hat
The following query submitted on behalf of a colleague that is not on the DistList. A colleague has a man's collapsible tophat, sometimes referred to as a "chapeau claque." It was made in Germany sometime in the 1920s out of a heavy black silk and has been stored for most of its life inside the original hatbox. While I was able to provide her with advice on temperature and humidity, I am not aware of other factors that might be involved in preserving it. For example, should the hat be stored open, or closed. Any information is greatly appreciated. David E.
