The NC Museum of History seeks professional conservator candidates
to preserve the museum's costume and textile collection comprised of
civilian clothing, military uniforms, household textiles, banners
and flags. The conservator will be responsible for condition and
treatment reports,stabilization treatments, wet cleaning, dressing
mannequins and lab maintenance.

The position will train and supervise volunteers, prepare costumes
and textiles for an active exhibition program. The conservator will
respond to patron requests regarding care of costumes and textiles.
Some evening, weekend work and overnight travel is required.

Possess a demonstrated knowledge of organic and inorganic chemistry,
physics, textile science, costume and textile history. Ability to
work co-operatively and communicate effectively with diverse staff,
volunteers and patrons. Ability to work in a modern textile setting
with detergents, bleaches, dyes, mordants. Ability to sustain
conservation tasks for extended periods of time. All work will be
conducted in accordance with the American Institute for
Conservation's Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Professional
Practice.

Minimum Qualifications: A Bachelor's degree or the equivalent
graduate training in Conservation practice from a recognized
educational facility / community college is required. Demonstrable
sewing skills, knowledge of textile structures, good sense of
organization, word-processing, familiar with conservation
photography, digital image processing an asset,and the ability to
communicate effectively in English. Successful experience in a
textile conservation laboratory is desirable.
