It seems to be fairly widespread practice in the UK to use what is
generically known as 'cross welder' to seal polyester films straight
to the surface of board and paper. These welders have an
electrically heated element which is covered with a strip of thin
PTFE coated glass cloth. The difficulty arises where the element is
mounted on the base rather than on the clamping arm. This means that
when sealing items in, they cannot be seen from above and only
partially from below. Many conservators have simply re-mounted the
heating element uppermost, but if one proceeds with great care this
is not strictly necessary. It is wise to practice with scraps as the
heat levels required will be lower than when bonding film to film
because of the insulating properties of the board. If the
temperature is too high, the board surface will turn brown. The
beauty of this system is that no adhesives are used and the
enclosure is both air and moisture permeable.
