One (1) full-time Mellon Project Conservation Technician Salary:
upper $20K's full-time, full benefits funded until 30 June 2003

One (1) part-time Mellon Project Preservation Assistant Wage:
$15.75/hour, 15 hours/week without benefits funded until 30 June
2003

Description: The Mellon Project Conservation Technician and
Preservation Assistant promote the preservation of library material
at The New-York Historical Society by performing basic repairs,
manufacturing protective enclosures, and other conservation
treatments determined to be appropriate by the senior conservator.

Duties: Conservation Technician and Preservation Assistant:
construct protective enclosures such as polyester film jackets,
four-flap wrappers, and phase boxes; consolidate leather, rehouse
collections into archival containers; create inventory and report
condition of collections; shift and transport collections; maintain
statistics and work log.  The Conservation Technician is also
responsible for simple paper and book mending.

Education:

    Conservation Technician: BA required with background in
    art/archives/library collections.

    Preservation Assistant:  BA preferred with background in
    art/archives/library collections.

Experience:

    Conservation Technician:  minimum 1 year conservation-related
    work; studio art helpful; library/museum experience desirable.

    Preservation Assistant:  minimum 1 year relevant experience;
    studio art helpful; library/museum experience desirable.

Requirements: Conservation Technician and Preservation Assistant:
perform exacting hand work with care, precision, patience, and
attention to detail; maintain organization and cleanliness of tasks
and workspace; ability to carry 40 pounds and routinely work while
standing; ability to safely handle heavy and oversize material; good
written and verbal communications skills; good computer skills;
ability to work well with others and alone; ability to exercise good
judgment; ability to work productively in deadline-oriented
activities.
