Subject: Courses on scagliola
Scagliola West Dean College February 10-14, 2003 and February 16-20, 2003 Course Code: 8D 076 (CC) Cost: UKP745 residential UKP665 non-residential This is very much a hands-on course giving the students an introduction to the making of the material called scagliola, often used in place of marble for exotic surfaces for walls, floors, table-tops and pedestals. While it has been found on artefacts of ancient civilisations, it was especially popular in the eighteenth century. Students will be introduced to the materials and tools used in its manufacture, and then as a combined group, make a plain round scagliola table-top using the traditional seventeenth century techniques and encompassing the skills of the finishing and polishing processes. Students will then apply themselves to making their own recipes and get a feel for the blending and mixing of different colours. They should be able to take home a selection of tiles, or simple picture frames made in scagliola by themselves, as well as a general knowledge of the possibilities of the material. The course will include a short lecture and slide show on the history and development of scagliola from the end of the sixteenth century through to the period Baroque/Rococo of Bavaria to the present time, including the conservation and restoration of scagliola. A short visit to view scagliola in situ at Goodwood House may also be arranged (for which there may be a small entrance charge). Students will also be shown the Marezzo technique of scagliola, a technique developed in the 19th Century and used largely in the State Capitols of America. David Hayles is one of the leading international experts on scagliola and has taught the subject at the European School for craft conservation in Venice and has been involved making scagliola for many projects and been involved in its conservation/restoration in this country, Australia and the U.S.. He is a partner in the ornamental plastering company Hayles and Howe which was founded in the 1970's. The course will run for two four-day blocks with a weekend in between. Students may stay on as residents in the College over this weekend. If you choose to do this please let us know in advance and ask the College Office for the additional cost payable to cover your accommodation and meals.
