Temporary Part-Time Position

Are you looking for an opportunity to work in one of Canada's
premier visual arts institutions with national and international
importance? You would be joining approximately 75 people who are
committed to the realization of the Gallery's innovative programs
and initiatives.

The Vancouver Art Gallery requires an experienced Conservation
Assistant to provide various conservation services including
condition assessments of works of art for new acquisitions,
exhibitions and loans; preventive conservation related to
maintenance, presentation, storage and loan of art works; and basic
conservation treatments. Reporting to the Conservator
responsibilities include:

    *   liaison with curatorial, registration, preparation and other
        professional and technical departments concerning
        conservation requirements and/or recommendations;

    *   preparation of works for storage, loan or exhibitions
        including recommendations and implementation of specialized
        packing and/or housing needs, frame stabilization and
        cleaning;

    *   performance of basic preventive or restorative conservation
        treatments;

    *   maintenance of departmental records and database files;
        responding to requests for  information; and supervision of
        interns and volunteers.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will have a minimum of one
to two years' experience working as a conservation assistant in a
professional capacity plus a diploma in conservation studies (or
equivalent) from a recognized institution. S/he will exercise
thoroughness, initiative and attention to detail and use specialized
technical knowledge of conservation examination, documentation and
treatment procedures. S/he will have:

    *   considerable knowledge of preventive conservation for fine
        art collections and materials;

    *   an applied knowledge of standard handling, care, storage,
        packing and crating procedures;

    *   computer skills and proficiency in relevant databases;

    *   excellent communication (written and verbal) skills;

    *   the ability to establish and maintain effective working
        relationships with staff, volunteers, and members of the
        public;

    *   knowledge of contemporary art is an asset.

Salary: $18.92 - 22.11 per hour plus a choice between benefits or
10% in lieu of all paid benefits.

Hours: 3 - 4 days per week (tbd). This is a maternity leave
replacement from mid-January 2003 up to June 20, 2003 with the
possibility of a further 6-month extension.
