Reporting to the Librarian/Assistant Dean for Information Services,
oversees preservation of library collections; serves as primary
expert for the library on conservation and preservation issues,
implementing collection-wide assessments to determine preservation
needs and priorities; evaluates all library materials for
conservation treatment in-house or by outside contractors; performs
and documents conservation treatments on rare or fragile books,
maps, architectural plans and drawings, and archival materials
monitors environmental conditions of the library to ensure long-term
survival of the collections; oversees the library's disaster
response plan and leads Disaster Recovery Team; participates in
fund-raising activities and gives presentations on conservation
issues to faculty, alumni/ae and donors.  Collaborates in exhibition
planning; prepares library materials for exhibition by performing
appropriate conservation treatments; ensures safe exhibition
handling practices; supervises occasional interns and project staff
for collection-specific projects supported by library fundraising;
monitors departmental budget and endowed funds for conservation;
collaborates with the Weissman Preservation Center of the Harvard
University Library to enhance the preservation program of the Design
School

Requirements:  Formal training in conservation with at least 4 yrs
professional conservation experience; demonstrated excellence
performing complex treatments on a wide range of book structures,
paper and media; knowledge of the history of bookbinding and of
contemporary practices in book and paper conservation; working
knowledge of chemistry and materials science; strong organizational
skills; ability to work collaboratively to determine and achieve
goals; excellent oral and written communication skills, including
demonstrated ability to document treatments and prepare reports.
