Subject: Rome
I would appreciate some bibliographical suggestions concerning the topic of the preservation and valorisation of the cultural heritage of the city of Rome. I am obviously aware that this is a huge topic. I need literature (possibly in English) mainly concerning theoretical, critical and even philosophical issues involved by the coexistence of the "historical" city with the "living" city. I am interested not only in the contemporary time (and thus in the question of the management of archeological sights which is not possible and even not advisable to isolate) but also in the very origins of the problem of preservation of the historical town (from Papal Rome onwards). As I shall give a course on this very topic, I wonder if there are some general readings suitable to students (330 level) who are mostly newcomers to the subject of preservation. I'd like to focus on the problem of the management of the past, on the theme of the "use" of the Antique (and the changing of its meaning over the centuries). Furthermore, I also want to give a clear idea of the overlapping of styles and periods which makes of Rome a unique urbanistic context.
