Subject: Lecture on preservation science
The Preservation Directorate of the Library of Congress announces the Twelfth and Thirteenth Events in its series of lectures on Topics in Preservation Science, to be held in the Madison Building, Library of Congress. March 31 - April 2, 2004 Lecture Series: "Where Science and Conservation Meet: a Challenging Field." Dr. Jan Wouters, Section Head of the Laboratory for Materials and Techniques at the Royal Institute for the Study and Conservation of Belgium's Artistic Heritage, will talk about leather and parchment, their chemistry, preparation, degradation, and analysis, emphasizing micro-methods and results obtained from several European research projects. April 6, 2004 Lecture: "Optimization of Archiving Optical Storage Media", West Dining Room, 9-11am. This will be presented by William P. Murray, who works as a Principal Reliability Engineer on implanted medical devices with Medtronic Corporation. He will present a brief overview of the development of CD's and will cover the growth rate of CD's, the construction differences, the optical read mechanism and the principal failure mechanism. This lecture is free and open to the public.
