Subject: Workshop on paintings repair--addendum
A clarification to the notice posted March 2 (DistList Instance 17:57): The deadline for the AIC Tear Repair Seminar to be held at the Getty Museum April 22nd and 23rd, 2004 has been extended to March 19. Although the laboratory portion of the workshop is full there is still plenty of space in the day and a half seminar. This seminar will include all of the information needed to learn the reweaving technique developed by Professor Heiber of the Hochschule fuer Bildende Kuenste, Dresden. This is not only a rare opportunity to learn this useful technique, but also a chance to meet Prof. Heiber. Heiber is well known and highly respected throughout the conservation community in Europe not only for his work on tear repairs but also for his innovative and inventive approach to conservation problem solving. He has been a pioneer in the conservation philosophy of minimal intervention. Even when speaking in English, he is eloquent and his reverence and respect for paintings as the physical manifestation of our cultural heritage is always inspirational. The first day of the seminar will include a history of the development of this technique, introduction to the equipment and materials used, step by step instructions on how to proceed with this technique, as well as examples of different tear repairs. The second day will include a lecture by Robert Proctor describing modifications and developments he has made in his 10 plus years experience with this technique. There will be a display of tools and equipment used. The seminar will end with a live video demonstration of Herr Heiber mending a tear through the microscope. Registration is $120 for AIC members; $200 for non-members. A special hotel rate of $89 per room (single or double, plus tax) has been arranged.
