Internships at Citywide Monuments Conservation Program, New York

The City of New York Parks and Recreation, Art and Antiquities
division, seeks a qualified candidate for the position of Monuments
Conservation Technician in the Citywide Monuments Conservation
Program.  This is a grant-funded position.

The Citywide Monuments Conservation Program conserves and maintains
public monuments and works of art throughout the five boroughs of
New York.

The Conservation Technician will perform conservation and
maintenance treatments on public  statuary, bronze and masonry.
He/she will conduct routine condition assessments and photo
documentation for monuments, as well as preparing treatment reports
and recommendations.

During the summer season, the technician will train and supervise
college and graduate-level field  trainees.

Other tasks include purchasing and maintenance of equipment and
supplies, contacting suppliers and vendors, opening vendor accounts,
obtaining bids from subcontractors, purchasing supplies, tracking
expenditures, as well as research and responding to public
information requests.

Applicants should have prior experience in outdoor monuments
conservation, including but not limited to corrosion removal,
cleaning and patination of bronze as well as stone cleaning, masonry
repair and graffiti removal.  Candidates should have excellent
administrative skills, writing and research ability; should be well
organized, yet flexible and able to manage multiple tasks. Recent
graduates of programs in objects conservation, historic preservation
or sculpture are encouraged to apply.  Candidates should be able to
work outdoors and not fear heights, as projects often require
scaffolding.  A valid New York City driver's license is required.
