ICCROM (International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and
Restoration of  Cultural Property) <URL:http://www.iccrom.org> is
recruiting a person who will be responsible for managing the
documentation service of ICCROM, which includes the library and the
archives.

The position: ICCROM is an intergovernmental organization, created
by UNESCO in 1956, with a  specific mandate to improve the quality
of conservation worldwide. It currently  comprises over 100 Member
States. Its statutory functions consist of providing advice  and
technical assistance, professional education and training, as well
as research. The  Library was created in 1959 and is, at present,
one of the world's leading bibliographic resources specialized in
cultural heritage conservation. The library has a computerised
catalogue and includes over 80.000 volumes in 40 languages,
comprising monographs  and periodicals (750 current journals). It is
a reference library open to the general  public (in particular to
conservation institution students, architects and urban planners
specialized in conservation and university researchers) as well as
to ICCROM programme staff.

The appointee will be in charge of acquisitions, the cataloguing of
books and articles in journals, and the supervision of the
periodicals collection  management (subscription and bindings) and
of the computerized catalogue. The post  applicant will also be
responsible for providing bibliographic reference services and  for
collaborative programmes with other libraries and documentation
centres at international level. He/she will work in close
collaboration with the interdisciplinary  professional staff of
ICCROM and will report directly to the Director General.

Knowledge, duties and required experience: The position requires a
degree in Librarianship or an equivalent qualification in library
science; a university degree in art history, history or similar
discipline; at least five years  professional experience in the
management of a library; and knowledge of cultural  heritage
preservation. He/she should have excellent teamworking, personnel
management and communication skills, with experience of working in
an international  and multicultural environment, as well as the
ability to work independently and with  flexibility. The person
should be able to show initiative, be responsible, and provide an
effective public service. He/she should be computer literate and
conversant with  computerised library systems. Excellent knowledge
of one of the two official  languages of ICCROM (French and English)
is required and a good knowledge of the  other. Familiarity with
Italian or other languages (for example, German or Spanish) will be
an advantage.

Employment conditions and treatment: The post of Manager,
Documentation, Library and Archives, will be for an initial  period
of four years, starting in September 2004, with a probationary
period of 12  months. The successful applicant will be expected to
reside in Rome. The salary for  this position is equivalent to a P3
level of the UN salary system, which currently  (February 2004)
corresponds to US$68,166 (without family allowance) or US$73,027
(with family allowance), taking into account the post adjustment for
Rome. Other  benefits are also provided. The salary and related
benefits are tax free but subject to  certain deductions, in
particular for health insurance and contributions the UN  Pension
Fund.
