Conservator/Project Manager and Conservation Assistant Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology The Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology is an internationally-renowned designated university museum with a strong involvement in research and teaching and a commitment to broadening access to its collections. UCL is planning the construction of a new building where the entire museum collection of around 80,000 objects will be on display or in visible storage. The museum is keen to experiment with a range of physical and automated systems to develop new solutions to the practical problems raised by these demands. In preparation for the move to new accommodation the museum is undertaking a major project, funded through the MLA Designation Challenge Fund, to remount the stored collections and experiment with solutions for labelling visible storage. It is seeking to appoint two project staff to work until March 2006. Conservator/ Project Manager UKP22,259 inclusive of London Allowance The Conservator/Project Manager will project manage and undertake the cleaning and remounting of the stored collections and organise and report on experimentation with labelling. The job involves liaising with other museum staff, managing the work of the assistant, students and volunteers, and managing project budgets. The successful candidate will be a fully qualified conservator, with experience of mounting and preventative conservation, knowledge of historic conservation practice and experience of using museum collections management systems. S/he will also have a highly organized approach to work and a demonstrable ability to manage a team and work to tight timetables. Grade: ALC 2, spine point 7. Conservation Assistant UKP16,033 inclusive of London Allowance The Conservation Assistant will undertake the cleaning and remounting of the collection, assisting the Conservator/ Project Manager with all aspects of the project. The successful candidate will have experience of object handling, mount making and preventative conservation, a basic knowledge of historic conservation practice.
