Conservator Mariners' Museum, Newport News, Virginia USA The Conservator works directly for the Chief Conservator in the conservation and maintenance of Museum collections. This individual works closely with the conservation staff and other Museum staff to conserve artifacts and to prepare them for exhibition. Major Job Duties: * Carry out established conservation procedures including examination and treatment of artifacts in the museum's collections. * Maintain detailed records of conservation treatments. * Identify conservation problems, initiate requests, implement solutions under established conservation guidelines, and make recommendations for resolving difficult or unusual problems. * Advise/perform preparation of mounts and installation of artifacts in exhibits; also consult on lighting and environmental control in exhibits. * Laboratory upkeep, and assisting in the ordering of supplies and equipment and maintenance and inventory of materials. * Other miscellaneous duties as assigned. Minimum Qualification Requirements Education: A bachelor's degree in conservation or related field is required, advanced degree preferred. Experience: Minimum of two years experience in conservation and artifact handling. Special Skills: * Working knowledge of acceptable practices for conservation and maintenance of objects. * Continued professional development in the conservation field. * Familiarity with a wide variety of materials including metals and organics; experience with objects from a marine environment desirable. * Organizational skills necessary for planning and organizing professional seminars, lectures. * Development of educational materials/activities for the public. * Attention to detail and accuracy. * Familiarity with accepted practices for achieving and insuring safety in the workplace. * Working knowledge of computers and databases. * Photographic skills desirable. Creativity: Description: Develop, improvise, and create solutions related to the maintenance and care of objects. Administrative Responsibility: Work closely with the Education Department in coordinating, training, and supervising docents and volunteers. Internal/External Relationships: External contacts include vendors, researchers, and the public. Regular internal contact with Museum staff. Physical Demands: * Talking (ordinary, oratory, other sounds); * Hearing (ordinary); * Seeing (acuity, good depth perception, color vision); * Sitting and standing; * May need to climb up and down ladders and stairs; * May require bending, stooping, and lifting to move and retrieve equipment and artifacts; * Pushing, pulling and carrying equipment and artifacts; * Reaching both above and below shoulder height; * Lifting up to 50 lbs. * Exposure to chemicals and solvents including strong acids and bases; * Ability to use various breathing apparatuses including possible use of respirators; * Fine motor skills. This is a full-time position with a starting salary of between $30,000-$35,000 per year and full benefits package including group medical and dental insurance, life and long term disability insurance, retirement plan, paid annual leave, sick leave and holidays.
