Subject: Workshop on spot testing
This summer the Institute of Fine Arts Conservation Center, New York University is offering the workshop Spot Testing for Materials Characterization co-sponsored by the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC) Instructors: Nancy Odegaard, Scott Carrlee August 31 - September 3, 2004 9 am - 5 pm Fee: $675.00 ($575.00 for AIC members) Application Deadline: July 16, 2004 Many conservators are familiar with the use of microchemical testing for material characterization, based on wet chemistry tests of standard textbooks. Such testing is an attractive analytical skill, as it requires a relatively modest amount of non-specialized equipment. However few have been trained in spot test procedures specifically designed for characterization of materials of cultural property and fine arts. The successful use of such tests is dependent on the use of the right chemicals, good lab technique, and knowledgeable interpretation of test results. Training in specific spot tests for conservation applications will maximize the usefulness of such testing for conservators. Participants will learn how to "do" a special selection of Spot Tests drawn from Material Characterization Tests for Objects of Art and Archaeology by Odegaard, Carroll, and Zimmt (2000 Archetype Books). The methodology for the course will use the processes of scientific method, as used in chemistry laboratories, combined with informed, safe laboratory practice. Participants will learn various methods of testing including the use of reagents, electrolysis, and test papers, through lecture and hands-on lab experience. At the conclusion of the workshop participants will be able to set up a testing program for their lab and conduct spot tests for characterization of organic and inorganic materials. The workshop will be held at the Conservation Center, 14 East 78th Street, New York, NY For more information and application form see: <URL:http://www.nyu.edu/gsas/dept/ fineart/ifa/curriculum/courses.htm> **** Moderator's comments: The above URL has been wrapped for email.
