The conservator will be responsible for condition and treatment reports, stabilization techniques, vacuuming, wet cleaning, laboratory maintenance, and dressing mannequins. the position will train and supervise volunteers, and prepare costumes and textiles for an active exhibition program. The conservator will respond to patron requests regarding care of costumes and textiles. some night and weekend work and overnight travel required. for internal purposes, met esc requirement as of 07/07/04. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: * demonstrated knowledge of organic and inorganic chemistry, physics, textile science, costume and textile history and conservation, standard conservation ethics, principles and practices, and consumer science. conservation skills including stabilization, wet cleaning and vacuuming techniques. * ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with diverse staff, volunteers, and patrons; ability to work in textile laboratory setting with detergents, bleaches, and other conservation chemicals; ability to sustain conservation tasks for extended periods of time. * prefer experience in conducting chemical treatments such as electrolytic, electrochemical reduction of corrosion, or closely related activities. Training and Experience Requirements: * A Master's degree in museum conservation, textiles or museum studies which include courses in chemistry, textile or object conservation and one year of experience related to the conservation of various metal, alloys, woods, textiles and leathers; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Prefer additional directly related education, training and experience as specified in the description of work and knowledge, skills and abilities sections above.
