Conservation Manager ArchCon Labs Margaret Gowen and Co. Ltd ArchCon Labs, the archaeological conservation laboratory of Margaret Gowen and Co., <URL:http://www.mglarc.com> one of Ireland's largest and leading archaeological consultancy firms, is seeking an archaeological conservator/lab manager. The successful candidate will be responsible for the management and future development of the company's purpose built laboratory, which provides conservation services for its own projects and for a variety of clients within the Irish archaeological profession. The candidate must have a degree in archaeological conservation or equivalent with a minimum of 3-5 years' practical experience. The candidate must have a secure working knowledge of the conservation of freshly excavated archaeological artefacts including waterlogged organics, metals, and low-fired ceramics. A knowledge of Irish archaeology would be an advantage. In addition to practical conservation of artefacts in the lab the candidate will occasionally be asked to carry out and to provide advice to the directors of excavations on handling, analysis and storage of artefacts. The successful applicant will be responsible for the day-to-day running of this busy laboratory including overseeing the transfer of objects to and from the lab, occasional retrievals/blocklifting on site, monitoring objects in storage, ordering materials, and carrying out or arranging for professional maintenance of equipment. The candidate will also be expected to ensure that the lab remains compliant with the Health and Safety regulations and with the disposal of hazardous chemicals legislation. Arch Con Labs is an expanding commercial enterprise within a dynamic, team based company. The successful candidate will be expected to have strong communication skills, be highly motivated, capable of working on his/her own initiative and both leading and working within of a small busy team. Responsibilities of the manager will include preparing estimates, tracking budgets, scheduling work to tight deadlines, supervising conservation assistants and occasional students, and dealing with clients. A working knowledge of project management would be an advantage and computer and report writing skills in English are essential. A clean European driving license is also necessary.
