You might consider adapting a procedure Linda Blaser developed for applying barcode stickers to rare books in the Folger Library's modern stacks: adhering the sticker to polyethylene strapping. As Linda wrote in Vol. 19 of the Book and Paper Group Annual, "The strapping is formed into a ring and slid onto the back cover. The barcode is adhered to that strap."
