Conservation Science Position Freer Gallery of Art The Department of Conservation and Scientific Research, Freer Gallery of Art/Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, will have available (September 2004) a short-term position to work in a research program devoted to the study of East Asian paintings using scientific methods. We are looking for a person with a good background in the physical sciences who can participate in the program of developing novel approaches to research ands applying them and existing methods to the study of paintings in the collections. Either M.S. or Ph.D. level qualifications (or their equivalent) in a branch of the physical sciences might be appropriate. Previous experience in the field is desirable but not essential. Applicants should be U.S. citizens or permanently resident non-citizens. The position may be at grade IS-9 ($41,815 + benefits) or IS-11 ($50,593 + benefits), depending on qualifications, and the appointment will be for one year in the first place with the possibility of renewal for a second.
