Symposium on color field painting

From: Glenn Gates <glenn_gates>
Date: Wednesday, July 7, 2004
Announcing the Andrew W. Mellon Symposium in Conservation Science
entitled "Challenges of the Color Field: a dialogue amongst
historians, conservators and scientists", Saturday, December 4,
2004, from 9:30 AM until 6:30 PM, at the Sackler lecture hall,
Harvard University Art Museums, Free admission.

Recognized for their abstract use of pure color and monumental
scale, color field painters employed new paint technologies to
develop novel artistic traditions that challenge audiences. This
symposium will feature five lectures by distinguished scholars
addressing the interdependence of conservation issues, technical
understanding and aesthetic concerns related to color field
paintings.

Speakers include: Dr. Thomas J. S. Learner, Senior Conservation
Scientist, Tate; Dr. Glenn Alan Gates, Andrew W. Mellon
Post-doctoral Fellow in Conservation Science, Harvard University Art
Museums; Tatiana Z. Ausema, Samuel H. Kress Fellow in Painting and
Modern Materials, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian
Institution; and J. William Shank, Private Conservator in San
Francisco, Former Chief Conservator at the San Francisco Museum of
Modern Art.

Coinciding with this event will be a special gallery installation of
significant paintings from the Harvard University Art Museum
collection.
