Curriculum created for AIC by Barbara Appelbaum, Michele Derrick,
Lindy Harrison, and Chandra Reedy

Course Fee: $120 AIC members; $180 non-members
Enrollment Limit: 25
Registration Deadline: October 15, 2004 (if space remains).
Registration fee includes optional follow-up advice and coaching.
Participants are responsible for all meals, housing, and
transportation.
Participants will be selected based on order of receipt of
registration.

Description:

    This one-day workshop, with follow-up activities conducted by
    email and phone, is designed specifically to assist conservation
    professionals who wish to write for professional journals or for
    book publication.  The workshop will include:

        *   Information and exercises aimed at both journal article
            writing and book writing, tailored specifically for the
            conservation profession

        *   A combination of lecture, discussion, small-group work,
            and hands-on writing exercises

        *   Optional one-on-one assistance on the morning of
            Saturday, November 6

        *   Follow-up for those participants who wish to send
            written materials to the instructors for comment and
            critique

Participants are encouraged to come with ideas for an article or
book manuscript.  The workshop will be adapted to the needs of the
participants.

Topics include:

    *   Writing for Peer-Reviewed Journals
    *   Writing Book Manuscripts
    *   Choosing a Title
    *   Overcoming Obstacles to Writing
    *   Publication Steps
    *   How to Get the Most Out of Writing Groups

Instructors:

    Barbara Appelbaum is a partner in Appelbaum and Himmelstein of
    New York City. She has written numerous articles for the AIC
    Journal, APT Bulletin, and other conservation publications.  She
    is on the Board of Editors for Art and archaeology technical
    abstracts and is the author of Guide to environmental protection
    of collections, published by Sound View Press.  She is a Fellow
    in AIC and IIC.  She has taught courses for New York University
    as well as writing workshops for the Textile Conservation Group
    and AIC.

    Aline M. ("Lindy") Harrison is adjunct Associate Professor of
    Chemistry at York College of Pennsylvania, and also teaches
    "Effective Technical Writing" for the American Chemical Society.
    She is the author of twenty professional articles, holds three
    patents, has given numerous presentations and, as well, presents
    on-line courses for the American Chemical Society.   In her
    spare time she has written two books for children on boating
    safety.  She is a licensed pilot.

Housing and Transportation:

    SOLINET is conveniently located in midtown Atlanta.  The MARTA
    rapid rail system runs directly from the airport to the Arts
    Center Station, an easy walk from SOLINET. Hotels and
    restaurants are within easy walking distance of the workshop

    all participants.
