Painting Conservator - Maternity Cover Assistant Conservator - Time-Based Media Conservation Scientist - 3 year PhD Fellowship Frames Conservation - 2 year Internship Tate The Tate Collection division is responsible for the development, research, care and conservation of the Collection to facilitate Tate programmes of display and exhibition at all sites, travelling exhibitions and loans out. Within this division, our Conservation department has a mission to bring excellence and innovation to the conservation and appreciation of art in Tate's Collection and care. We have a variety of exciting opportunities for you to join us in achieving this. Painting Conservator - Maternity Cover Starting salary: UKP21,000 pa pro-rata * 6-12 months/3 days per week Covering maternity leave in our Painting Conservation team, you will focus on Tate's loan-out programme. Your responsibilities will include providing recommendations on the suitability of paintings for loan, condition checking, and providing documentation and conservation treatments where necessary. A specific project will be the preparation of thirty seven paintings by Turner for a touring exhibition to the USA. You will hold a recognised post graduate qualification in the conservation of easel paintings and have at least three years' relevant experience after training. You will have good practical skills with experience of working with paintings across a broad spectrum. In addition, strong communication, organisational and analytical skills are essential. Ref. 4112/CR Assistant Conservator - Time-Based Media Starting salary: UKP17,000 pa * 2 year fixed term contract Time-based media conservation is responsible for works with a film, video, slide, audio or computer-based element. You will be assisting in a European-funded project to set benchmarks for the preservation of installation art. This will involve working on case studies, assessing appropriate methods of analysis and documentation, compiling written and visual project records and assisting with the administration of the project. This post provides an opportunity for a conservator to develop practical and technical knowledge of time-based media works of art and engage in a challenging new area of conservation. With a relevant degree and recognised qualification in conservation (or equivalent training), you will bring at least two years' general conservation experience, enjoy working with technology and have excellent analytical and technical ability and strong organisational skills. Ideally you have experience of working with contemporary works of art and some experience of time-based media. You will be able to work effectively within a team or independently and work to tight deadlines. Ref 4113/CR Conservation Scientist - 3 year PhD Fellowship Starting salary: UKP17,000 pa This fellowship presents you with a rare opportunity to acquire specialist skills and knowledge in the characterisation of modern and contemporary paints. It will involve initiating a long term study into the mechanical properties of modern paints in collaboration with the Courtauld Institute and Imperial College, London, where you will register for a PhD. You will also operate and develop the analytical instruments (PyGCMS and FTIR) in Tate's science laboratory. To be eligible for this fellowship you must have a master's degree in a physical science, preferably chemistry or engineering. At least three years' experience with mechanical testing instruments and one (or preferably both) of the specified analytical techniques is essential. You will also need to have significant knowledge of modern painting materials and conservation research. Ref 4114/CR Frames Conservation - 2 year Internship Starting salary: UKP15,000 pa Gaining invaluable experience of working in a major art institution, you will learn about museum practice, and contribute to the daily work of the Frames Conservation section. Over two years, you will have the opportunity, under supervision, to carry out examination, documentation and treatment of a variety of frames from the Collection. You will need a recognised conservation qualification in frames or equivalent experience. Importantly you should be fully committed to developing your career within the frame conservation profession.
