Subject: Workshop on architectural records
Management and Preservation of Architectural Records Zimmerman Library, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque Jan. 13, 2005 (9am-5pm) and Jan. 14, 2005 (9am-1pm) Taught by Waverly Lowell Curator, Environmental Design Archives, UC Berkeley Registration is limited to 25 people. Cost $25 Records of the built environment, architectural, landscape, engineering, cartographic, and interior design, are essential for understanding, using, and preserving the physical world. These documents, photographs, and drawings are often unique, complex, technical, beautiful, unwieldy, and frequently at risk. Archivists, librarians, office administrators, records managers, and museum curators have wrestled with the issues of what to collect or retain, how to appraise, arrange, describe, and preserve these diverse materials. In addition to the subjects listed above, this workshop will also provide a context for under-standing the historical development and creation of architectural records, a framework for addressing their management and use; a discussion of the role of electronic media in the design and construction process and how it affects records professionals; and the importance of an active relationship between creators, keepers, and users of these records. The workshop will present an overview of the different types of records and how to identify them, and address aspects of their archival administration including reformatting, legal and access issues, reference practices, and exhibition. Rooms are available at Plaza Inn (1-800-237-1307) for $55/night plus tax if you say you're with New Mexico Preservation Alliance. All meals on your own.
