Subject: Deterioration of plastic
In February 2005, a one-year project was started at the National Heritage Board of Sweden with the aim to help preserve plastic materials in our museum collections. The aims of this interdisciplinary pilot project are the following: 1. By examination of material in some central museums find out which plastic materials in these collections are most affected, and why these in particular have been susceptible; 2. Analyze any emissions from the degrading objects 3. Give preliminary recommendations for storage of the plastic artifacts, in regard to climatic conditions present and resources available for the museums; 4. Suggest urgent relevant subjects for future research. Conservators and conservation scientists interested in the degradation of plastic materials are kindly invited to contact us for interchange of experience. Anders G.
